Legend has it that this 900-foot long, five-foot high fishpond was built in one night by the mythical Menehune, Hawaiëiís mischievous little people who performed legendary engineering feats. Located near the HulÎëia Wildlife Refuge, it can be viewed from an overlook on a road above, or as part of an exhilarating kayak excursion.

Heëeia Fishpond (Oëahu) – www.paepaeoheeia.org
An 88 acre brackish water seashore fishpond that was in use as late as the 1950s, Heëeia Fishpond is located near Heëeia State Park on Oëahuís windward coast. As with all ancient fishponds, the exact date when Heëeia Fishpond was constructed is unknown, but it is said to have been built over 600 years ago. It is unique in that its stone and coral wall completely encircles the entire pond.

Köëieëie Fishpond (Maui) – www.mauifishpond.com
Believed to date back to the earliest years of settlement in Hawaiëi more than 500 years ago, Köëieëie Fishpond is a technological feat of expertly crafted stonework enclosing three acres of sea water. Located in KÔhei, Köëieëie Fishpond, it is one of the few remaining fishponds on Maui, and is being lovingly restored by ëAoëao O Nä Loko Iëa O Maui (Association of the Fishponds of Maui).

Kalähuipuaëa Fishponds (Hawaiëiís Big Island) – www.maunalani.com
Located on the grounds of the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows, Kalähuipuaëa, a series of four main ponds and three smaller ones is the most documented and well-restored of all the ancient fishponds along the Kona-Kohala Coast. Like the other ponds along this coast, Kalähuipuaëa is an inland pond where water collects in pools at the shoreline, and because of the porous rock, rises and falls with the tide. These inland fishponds are thought to be unique to Hawaiëi.

På Hawaii har man för länge sedan haft speciella ìfiskdammarî i havet där man förvarade fiskar (speciella ìdammväggarî av korall byggdes […]

[55,95,183
3653
